ScholarGPS, a digital research analytics platform, has ranked several UCF engineering and computer science professors among the top researchers in their respective fields of study. These professors have been named Highly Ranked Scholars for their number of publications, the impact of their work and their scholarly contributions, which place them within the top 0.05% of all scholars worldwide. Rankings are based on either the past five years’ worth of publications or the lifetime total of publications.
No. 1 in Accident Analysis – Mohamed Abdel-Aty
Professor Mohamed Abdel-Aty has been ranked No. 1 for accident analysis and No. 2 for overall accident research based on his publications over the past five years. His lifetime rankings place him at No. 2 for accident analysis, No. 3 for accident research and No. 5 for traffic collision research.
Aty’s high rankings aren’t surprising for someone who has published more than 445 journal articles. The former chair of the Department of Civil, Environmental and Construction Engineering manages the Smart and Safe Transportation Lab with Associate Professor Natalia Barbour. He’s been named a Pegasus Professor and Trustee Chair at UCF and has served on the editorial board for a number of prestigious journals.
The additional categories Aty is ranked in for both lifetime and prior five years publications include transport, emerging technologies, civil and environmental engineering, and engineering and computer science.
No. 1 in Municipal Waste Management – Ni-bin Chang
Ni-bin Chang, also a professor in the CECE department, has been ranked No. 1 for municipal waste management research based on his lifetime publications. Other rankings include No. 4 for environmental resource management, No. 7 for waste management and No. 14 for urban area research.
Chang has published more than 300 journal articles and has more than 30 years of practical experience as an engineer and academic. His research focuses on sustainability science and engineering.
No. 3 in Activity Recognition – Mubarak Shah
Mubarak Shah, the director of the Center for Research in Computer Vision, has been ranked No. 3 for research in activity recognition based on lifetime publications. Other categories Shah is ranked in include computer vision, pattern recognition, computer science, and engineering and computer science.
Shah has also been named a Pegasus Professor and Trustee Chair at UCF, and has become a member of the UCF Millionaire’s Club, which recognizes faculty who have earned a significant amount of research funding.
